Joel is scoring the new ETV soapie "Rhythm City"
JOHANNESBURG -- E.tv has chosen Curious Pictures, producer of some of South Africa's most highly regarded dramas ("Hard Copy," "Heartlines"), to produce a soap for the free-to-air channel to replace its youth-targeting "Backstage."
Sticking with the youth drama theme in the competitive 6:30-7 p.m. daily timeslot, new e.tv soap "Rhythm City" revolves around the trials and tribulations of those in the contempo music industry. Exec producer Monde Twala says the show will aim to entertain and deeply explore the lives of young people. E.tv channel director Bronwyn Keene-Young said she is confident "Rhythm City" is the right show for this important timeslot, "specifically with the vibrant music industry as a backdrop for a soap opera that will appeal to both the youth and adults."
E.tv announced in March that "Backstage," which never really took off since its launch in May 2000 as a soap aimed at the youth market, would be cancelled.
Created by Mfundi Vundla, who is responsible for "Generations," the longest-running and most watched local soap, the show was continually marred by controversy, including cast problems and a legal battle over intellectual ownership and production control after e.tv ditched Vundla and appointed its own production house for the soap after only a year on air.
It was no surprise in the industry that the little-watched "Backstage" -- with fewer than 200,000 viewers -- became the first victim of the sudser war in the 6:30-7 p.m. slot during which it competes against popular local soaps "Sewende laan" (2 million-plus viewers on SABC2), "Isidingo" (1.5 million on SABC3) and, since January, M-Net's "Binnelanders" (500,000), adapted into a daily soap from a weekly hospital drama.
"Backstage" will air its last show on June 29, and "Rhythm City" will make its debut July 9.
